People ask my why I write deep short poems, and why I call them that. I think my poetic style stems from how things were in my family: noisy, chaotic, unpredictable, and bewildering. There was only limited space for me to express anything in my family, and I had to say it quickly, otherwise it would be engulfed by the din. I learned to say things rapidly and then get out, which led to my minimalist, pithy writing style.
I was often an observer in my family, dissecting what was going on, looking in from the outside. This dynamic helped me learn how analyze human behavior, look below the surface, think critically, and challenge conventionality. My poetry is deep because I learned to observe and listen instead of talking.
I’m lucky to have developed a style that brings me so much joy and celebrates who I am. I hope it resonates with you.
